Day 1: Transfer to Bwindi Impenetrable National Park

Your safari begins with pickup from Entebbe, Kampala or Kigali, depending on your preferred starting point.

Starting from Entebbe or Kampala

Depart early in the morning and travel through Uganda’s countryside towards southwestern Uganda. Along the way, enjoy views of rural communities, rolling hills, farmland and changing landscapes.

Depending on your route and schedule, you may stop near the Equator for photographs and refreshments.

The drive usually takes around eight to ten hours or longer, depending on traffic, road conditions and the location of your accommodation.

On arrival near Bwindi Impenetrable National Park, check in at your lodge, enjoy dinner and relax before the following day’s adventure.

Starting from Kigali, Rwanda

If you choose Kigali as your starting point, your driver-guide will pick you up from your hotel or Kigali International Airport, according to your arrangements.

Travel through Rwanda’s scenic hills before crossing into Uganda and continuing towards Bwindi. This option can be convenient for travellers who prefer to access southwestern Uganda through Rwanda.

Travel time depends on your chosen trekking sector, road conditions and border formalities. Ensure that you have the necessary travel documents for crossing between the two countries.

Upon arrival, check in at your lodge and prepare for the gorilla trekking experience.

Accommodation: Lodge or safari camp near Bwindi.

Meals: Lunch and dinner, depending on your departure arrangements.

Day 2: Gorilla Trekking in Bwindi Forest

Wake up to breakfast before heading to the designated park headquarters for your gorilla trekking briefing.

Park rangers will explain the trekking guidelines and introduce you to the rules for observing mountain gorillas responsibly.

You will then enter the forest with authorised guides and trackers to search for a habituated gorilla family.

The trek can take a few hours or longer, depending on the location of the gorillas and the terrain. Bwindi is a dense tropical rainforest, so expect uneven trails, steep sections and potentially muddy conditions.

Once your gorilla family is located, you will normally spend one hour observing these incredible animals, following the park’s rules and your guides’ instructions.

Watch the gorillas feed, rest, groom one another and interact within their family groups. Seeing a silverback up close or watching young gorillas play among the vegetation can be one of the most memorable moments of your African holiday.

After the encounter, return to the starting point and transfer back to your lodge.

Spend the afternoon relaxing or arrange an optional cultural experience if time and availability permit.

Accommodation: Lodge or safari camp near Bwindi.

Meals: Breakfast, lunch and dinner, according to your package.

Day 3: Return to Entebbe, Kampala or Kigali

After breakfast, check out of your lodge and begin the return journey.

Travellers returning to Entebbe or Kampala will drive back through southwestern Uganda, with a stop for lunch along the way. Arrival is generally in the late afternoon or evening, depending on road conditions and the destination.

Travellers returning to Kigali will travel towards the Uganda–Rwanda border, complete the necessary formalities and continue to Kigali.

If you are connecting to an international flight, allow sufficient time for the road journey and possible border delays. An additional overnight stay may be advisable if your flight schedule is tight.

Your three-day gorilla trekking safari ends with drop-off at your agreed hotel, airport or other suitable location.

Meals: Breakfast and lunch, depending on your package.

What Is Included in the Safari?

Your package can be arranged to include a professional driver-guide, ground transportation, fuel, two nights of accommodation, meals as specified and a Uganda gorilla trekking permit for each traveller.

Airport transfers can also be arranged from your agreed starting point.

The exact inclusions depend on your selected package and quotation. Confirm all arrangements before booking, particularly the gorilla permit, accommodation, meals and cross-border transport if starting from Kigali.

What Is Excluded?

Unless stated otherwise in your quotation, exclusions may include international flights, visas, travel insurance, tips, personal expenses, alcoholic drinks and optional activities.

Travellers starting in Kigali should confirm their border-crossing arrangements and applicable entry requirements before departure.

Best Time for Gorilla Trekking in Uganda

Gorilla trekking is available throughout the year, subject to permit availability and park arrangements.

The relatively drier months of June to August and December to February are popular with many travellers because forest trails may be easier to navigate.

During wetter months, Bwindi becomes especially lush, but trails can be muddy and slippery. Rain is possible at any time, so waterproof clothing and suitable hiking boots are recommended.

Book your gorilla trekking permit early, particularly if you plan to travel during a busy holiday period.

What to Pack for Gorilla Trekking

Bring comfortable hiking boots with good grip, long trousers, long-sleeved clothing, a waterproof jacket, gardening gloves, drinking water and a small backpack.

Insect repellent, sunscreen and a camera are also useful. A walking stick may help on steep or slippery trails.

Prepare for changing weather and uneven terrain. If you have concerns about your fitness or walking ability, discuss them with your safari organiser before booking.
